LONDON ― President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump touch down in London on Thursday for a working visit, and while his meeting schedule will keep him nearly exclusively outside of the capital, she will be spending some time in town.
A giant balloon of Trump as a baby will spend two hours floating over London's historic Parliament Square, close to the houses of parliament, after the mayor of London gave permission to an activist who raised £17,000 ($23,000) for the cause.
Allan Hogarth, head of policy at Amnesty International U.K., said Trump's visit is a major "opportunity for the U.K.to show that peaceful protest is an essential component of a free and fair society, not something to be shut down as a political embarrassment".
Nona Hurkmans, one of the activists behind the infantile inflatable of Trump, said the balloon was a fair response to Trump's own behavior and downplayed claims that Trump deserved more respect.
Britain "is in somewhat turmoil", Trump said before departing Washington, remarking that dealing with Putin might surprisingly be the easiest part of the European trip.
But Donald Trump is not just any leader.
Unlike visits from previous presidents, he won't be spending much time in London after his arrival.
The Stop Trump Coalition-a group of organizations that played a role in planning the nationwide actions-provided a map of the protests Trump's team will be attempting to avoid.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to protest against Trump's visit in central London on Friday, citing his alleged Islamophobia, controversial policies and "incendiary rhetoric" towards people with disabilities and the LGBTQ community.
"It's really kind of irrelevant to what we're trying to do and I don't think certainly it doesn't express the opinion of the British people I met", he said. "It's not for me to decide what's in good taste or bad taste".
"From the public, the welcome will be far from warm", he told lawmakers on Wednesday, noting there would be protests across the country against Trump's "abysmal record on human rights, his repugnant attitude toward women and his disgusting treatment of minorities".
"I'm excited to welcome the President of the United States", says Drew, who's 21.
Trump arrives in Britain on Thursday after the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Belgium and will stay overnight at the central London residence of the USA ambassador, where a high metal security fence has been erected outside.
On Friday, May and Trump will visit a defense site then travel to the prime minister's Chequers country residence for talks followed by a press conference.
