Over the following decades, millions would listen to both group and solo recordings by the Jackson 5 (who later became known as The Jacksons) and Michael would become one of the most popular entertainers in history.
The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not allowed to discuss the topic publicly, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Jackson died but had no additional information. The following year, they moved to Gary, Indiana and purchased a small house, ironically, at 2300 Jackson Street.
The Jackson family was often riven by legal battles, jealousies, money disputes, Joe's philandering and unproven allegations of child molestation against Michael.
Additionally, Jackson appeared as himself in a handful of films and television shows - including Louis, Martin & Michael, Anke Late Night, E! "Once he ripped the wire cord off the refrigerator and whopped me with it".
The Jackson 5's big break came in 1967 when they won an amateur competition at New York's Apollo Theater.
His children, including Michael, have accused him of abuse, but Jackson said his tactics made them successful.
The group only went from strength-to-strength. His stylized videos became entertainment trendsetters.
In 2013 interview with CNN, Jackson was asked about his daughter Janet's complaint that the children were not allowed to call him "Dad", instead referring to him as "Joe". His health was also fragile after a stroke and three heart attacks back in 2015, resulting in doctors implanted a pacemaker.
Several family members, including his wife, Katherine, his children and grandchildren reportedly made visits to his hospital bed in the days ahead of his passing. Jackson also had a daughter out of wedlock.
