Human Rights Watch U.N. director Louis Charbonneau said the US draft General Assembly resolution "could have backfired badly and the process could have been hijacked" by the countries seeking to undermine the Human Rights Council.
In a letter sent to non-governmental organisations, Haley complained that they had played a "deconstructive" role by refusing to support United States efforts to take Israel off the council's agenda. "Going forward, we encourage you to play a constructive role on behalf of human rights, rather than the deconstructive one you played in this instance".
The United States announced on Tuesday that it is officially leaving the U.N.'s Human Rights Commission. "Instead of dealing with regimes that systematically violate human rights, the UNHRC obsessively focuses on Israel, the one genuine democracy in the Middle East".
The United States says the council's hypocritical, self righteous about Israel and the West in general, while ignoring the abuses of numerous 47 member countries' which sit on it. We have a Constitution.
"While we do not seek to impose the American system on anyone else, we do support the rights of all people to have freedoms bestowed on them by their creator".
Defending the move, USA national security adviser John Bolton said Wednesday "we don't need advice by the United Nations or other global bodies on how to govern ourselves".
The US' announcement comes after the council voted last month to probe the killing of scores of Palestinian protesters in the Gaza Strip and accused Israel of excessive use of force.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office called the United States decision "courageous, " saying it was "an unequivocal statement that enough is enough".
Haley said the United States had given the human rights body "opportunity after opportunity" to make changes.
Speaking about the decision Tuesday night, Pompeo called the organization a "poor defender of human rights". Although numerous officials have said repeatedly that "America First does not mean America Alone", the administration has retreated from multiple multilateral accords and consensuses since it took office.
"You put yourself on the side of Russian Federation and China, and opposite the United States, on a key human rights issue", she wrote.
"The thought that any state would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable", said the top United Nations human rights official.
Haley said a year ago that Washington was reviewing its membership.
Israel is the only country that is subject to a permanent standing agenda item, meaning its treatment of the Palestinians is regularly scrutinised by the UNHRC. She also criticized countries which shared US values and encouraged Washington to remain, but "were unwilling to seriously challenge the status quo". "All Trump seems to care about is defending Israel". The United States was half-way through a three-year term on the Geneva-based 47-member body.
"Israel is, as the saying goes, a canary in the mineshaft for the United States", Bolton said.
"When the Human Rights Council was first stood up back in 2006 the ambassador to the United Nations at the time was John Bolton, who persuaded then-President Bush not to join the body for the reasons that Haley today spelled out", said Al Jazeera's Jordan. The U.S. joined the body only in 2009 under President Barack Obama.
