The champion of the 93-year-old competition will receive more than $42,000 in cash and prizes.
And Bailly got his well-deserved recognition during the finals when he quoted the song "Shake It Off" for the sample sentence for the word "pseudepigrapha", which Abhijay Kodali, 11, of Flower Mound, Texas, spelled correctly. It was the largest group in contest history to advance to the championship finals.
"I didn't really think I'd be able to do it", the soft-spoken victor said. But they also take a preliminary multiple-choice vocabulary and spelling test. Contrast that to Nemmani's victory that was reported with regular headlines, such as this one in CNN: "Texas teen wins National Spelling Bee".

Some of these students' parents pay more than $200 an hour to have their prodigies coached by an expert, and the ages of competitors range from 8-years-old to 15.
There were a total of 516 children who qualified for the nationals this year.
On Wednesday night, bee officials used test scores to determine that 41 spellers would move on to the finals, to compete under the glaring lights of prime-time television. The wild cards pushed the total number of spellers in the bee to 515 - there had never been more than 300 in the past - and forced Scripps to add a third day of competition. It was the top "how to spell" word in 11 states. But then the three-time Missoula County spelling bee champion will once again hit the books.
