President Trump touted his administration's push to increase military spending in a commencement address at the Naval Academy on Friday, telling graduating midshipmen that the USA had regained its stride on the world stage.
"In case you haven't noticed, we have become a lot stronger lately". He said: "They very much want to do it, we'd like to do it".
"We'll see what happens".
"Odder still is POTUS here has a legitimate thing to boast about - 2018 brings the biggest military pay raise (2.4%) in 8 years", Tapper noted, before observing that if Trump had told the truth "that would be acknowledging Obama gave a bigger pay raise in 2010".
"We are witnessing the great reawakening of the American spirit and of American might", he said at the ceremony in Annapolis. Mr. Trump is giving the U.S. Naval Academy's commencement speech in Annapolis, Md., Friday morning. We are going to stand up for our values.
The president's commencement address comes a day after the president cancelled a planned summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, which had been scheduled to take place in Singapore on June 12th, saying it would be "inappropriate" to move forward with the meeting given the "tremendous anger and open hostility" expressed in a previous statement from North Korea that threatened the possibility of nuclear showdown and disparaged Vice President Mike Pence as a "political dummy". "And when did we need it more than now? Victory, winning, handsome words but that's what it's all about".
The president promised to shake the hands of every Naval Academy graduate following his speech.
"We are not going to apologize for America, we are going to stand up for America - no more apologies", he said in his address to graduates.
"If a fight must come, there is no other alternative".
Last year, he gave remarks at the U.S. Coast Guard graduation ceremony in New London, Conn. On Friday, after the president's comment that the summit might still take place as scheduled, the White House said there are no plans right now for a US team to try again this weekend to meet with the North Korean in Singapore.
