Surface Hub 2 will start heading out to customers later this year but only in a small pilot group.
For those keeping track, 3:2 is the same aspect ratio as Microsoft's other Surface products, and it works well with this new device considering the fact that it can now rotate to a portrait position as well.
The screen can also easily be rotated between portrait and landscape depending on the content being viewed. "The new Surface Hub 2 is sleeker, more agile and more affordable to fit any workspace or work style", explained Panas Panay, chief product officer in a blog.
This week, Microsoft has begun more openly talking about the new hardware and we finally have our first look at the new device.
Microsoft debuted the first-generation Surface Hub in January, 2015, at the remarkable event that also introduced the world to the HoloLens. Over half of Fortune 100 companies have purchased Surface Hubs to improve team's efficiency and how they collaborate - breaking down barriers and creating real business value We believe our customers will love Surface Hub 2 even more.
Of course, it was designed with Microsoft apps in mind, including Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Whiteboard, Office 365 and Windows 10 - it's not clear how other platforms will work beyond simply Skyping in.
It's unclear if each company has bought one Surface Hub or a thousand.
The Surface Hub 2 won't be battery-powered, though Microsoft's not saying exactly what technology will power it. Companies can line up four Surface Hub 2s together to get an incredibly lovely experience across all the Surface Hub 2s. The Surface Hub 2 will also feature an upgraded processor.
Microsoft's Surface Hub, its conference room computer, was something of a surprise hit. While we are having a video call with someone, we do not have to shrink their face, but instead, use the full capacity of the Surface Hub 2.
Surface Hub 1's operating system is called "Windows 10 Team" and based on Windows 10 Enterprise, but customized with some features unique to the device. Hanging from a conference room wall or specialized stand, previous models were created to be used in landscape mode. We were told to expect more information about Surface Hub 2 in late summer/early fall.
With the Surface Hub 2, the upcoming device will support multi-user sign-ins.
Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't plan to share further details of the Surface Hub 2 until later this year, including the price.
