The Program is expected foster a meaningful dialogue on the balance between local and national interests related to UAS integration, and provide actionable information to the U.S. Department of Transportation regarding the expanded and universal integration of UAS into the National Airspace System.

Over the next three years, those areas will test out their ideas and systems to determine whether it's possible to safely integrate drones that are flying on their own, beyond the line of sight of a human pilot, day and night, into the air above United States citizens.
The Transportation Department says more demonstration projects may be given the go-ahead in future rounds.
