After the fatal shootings, Snyder reportedly barricaded himself in his home in a police standoff that lasted more than six hours.
Snyder's wife allegedly told police the slaughter began after she ran out of her home after being held there over the weekend. The wife and the two others were able to escape unharmed. Investigators said Tuesday the motive remains under investigation but noted that Snyder's wife told them she had been held against her will by her husband over the weekend and had managed to escape to her neighbor's home Monday afternoon.
The police were alerted to the situation after receiving a number of 911 calls at 3:44 p.m. EDT, some of which had sounds of gunshots going off in the background. The suspect was on the phone with negotiators. "One of those adults was the suspect's wife", Manger said.
Over four hours after police initially responded to the incident, the area remained an "active scene", the county police department said on its official Twitter page.
The tactical team was searching the rest of the house because, during the negotiations, police learned that there could be explosives and several guns inside the house, Manger said.
Police said negotiators were speaking via telephone with the suspect, who refused to come out. He followed her to the home where police said he opened fire. The three weren't the only ones there at the time of the shooting, however.
Officers breached the front door at 11 p.m., with Snyder still on the phone with negotiators, prompting Snyder to hang up.
The suspect was reportedly known to police.
