When the Memphis Grizzlies made a decision to fire Fizdale, James expressed his frustration and offered some encouraging words to the Knicks coach.
While it's unlikely NY will return to the playoffs at first, Fizdale is one of the most promising coaches in the league.
According to Woj, the two parties have come to terms on a four-year deal after he met with owner James Dolan in NY on Thursday.
The Knicks have hired David Fizdale as head coach, who worked with James with the Miami Heat.
Fizdale led the Grizzlies to a 43-39 record and a spot in the Western Conference playoffs in 2016-17.
Before being hired by Memphis, Fizdale was a longtime National Basketball Association assistant with the Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat.
That kind of defensive mindset will be a welcomed addition to a Knicks team whose defense has been ranked 20th or worse in each of the last two seasons.
It has been speculated that the Knicks wanted Fizdale because they feel it bolsters their chances of signing LeBron James in the offseason.
But Fizdale is well-respected and liked by players around the league.
Fizdale will be allowed to have a learning curve in NY. According to Marc J. Spears of ESPN he was offered the Phoenix Suns job, but he turned it down in hopes of getting the Knicks job. If both centers agree to become free agents, the Knicks would also have to trade Courtney Lee to a team who have enough salary cap space to absorb his contract.
