Iran, along with Damascus and its big-power backer Russian Federation, blamed Israel for an April 9 air strike on a Syrian air base, T-4, that killed seven Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) members.
The IDF had tracked an Iranian plane flying a Tor missile system from Tehran to the T-4 base in Syria, and it chose to act quickly to destroy Iran's defense system before it was made operational, intelligence officials were quoted as saying in the Journal report.
According to Daniel, Israel was bracing for a possible Iranian missile salvo or armed drone assault from Syria.
14 fighters were killed in the strike, including Iranian forces.
Iran wanted to install the Tor defense system in response to an Israeli airstrike on the T-4 base earlier this year, intelligence officials said. Israeli officials have repeatedly stated that Israel will not allow Iran to entrench itself in Syria, marking it as a "red line" that it will fight for militarily if necessary.
He said that "these aggressive measures do not prevent our efforts in the fight against terrorism and extremism in the region, and in particular in Syria", adding: "The process of achieving peace in Syria has become more hard after this USA action, but consultations and tripartite ties between Iran, Russia and Turkey must continue, and we must attempt to develop peace and stability and to establish a dialogue in this country".
"Israel: Don't trust in your airbases; they're within reach", Hossein Salami wrote on Twitter, also making similar comments in a fiery speech. "You live in the dragon's mouth".
A U.S. official also told NBC News that Israel carried out the attack and that Israeli officials forewarned Washington in advance. "(Referring to the July war in Lebanon in 2006) you will have no way to runaway except the sea", Salami is quoted as saying.
Iranian-Israeli relations have always been highly tense, as Tehran doesn't recognize Israel's right to exist. He called for those who are on the Northern borders to think carefully about what they are doing, indicating Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia.
"I do not believe that we are headed towards regional war but I do believe that unfortunately, Israel has continued its violations with global law, hoping to be able to do it with impunity because of the USA support and trying to find smokescreens to hide behind", said Zarif, Xinhua reported.
