With a focus on the problem of excessive use of plastic, Earth Day this year will address how we as individuals can cut down on the use of plastics and how it will help the environment. This year's global theme is "End Plastic Pollution".
This is unedited, unformatted feed from the Press Trust of India wire. It takes a step forward towards the preservation of planet across the globe.
Plastics have seriously damaged land and bodies of water, and consequently marine life and human health, said Loren Legarda.
According to him, government is exploring the possibility of banning plastic bags with availability of alternatives. "We stand to lose a wide variety of environmental goods and services that we take for granted".
The world produced 20 times more plastic in 2014 (311 million tonnes) than it did in 1964 (15 million tonnes), Legarda said, citing the 2016 report "The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the Future of Plastics" of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
We recently saw the "plasticberg" of garbage that drifted into parts of our pristine Caribbean Sea, underscoring the plastic pollution that already spoils some of our beaches.
The movement is focusing on a multi-year campaign to end plastic pollution.
Mr Jibril said that the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with critical stakeholders had developed a national strategy for the phase-out of non-biodegradable plastics. Let's encourage our governments, our hotels and tourism businesses to be leaders in keeping plastics out of our seas, and also engage with the cruise and airline industries to eliminate plastic waste.
"Eight plants have already been completed and handed over to the states of location while 18 others are at various stages of completion". As we all know, plastic is non-biodegradable and even if you dispose the plastic it will be there in the environment for more than 2,000 years.
