Amazon Prime's subscriber base has reached an astonishing level with more than 100 million people signed up to the service, Jeff Bezos, Amazon's chief executive and the world's richest man, said in the company's annual shareowner letter this week.
In a statement, Amazon said all its marketplace sellers "must follow our selling guidelines and those who don't will be subject to action including potential removal of their account".
More new members joined Prime last year than in any previous year, Bezos stated in the letter, both worldwide and in the U.S. Today, Prime members in the U.S. receive unlimited free two-day shipping on over 100 million different items, he indicated.
In 2017, for the first time in our history, more than half of the units sold on Amazon worldwide were from our third-party sellers, including small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Granted, not all Amazon Prime members take advantage of the company's streaming content, but it does make it clear the company is a real competitor in this space. You can not rest on your laurels in this world. "Amazon continues to have an "iron grip" on the e-commerce market heading into the rest of 2018 despite a clear bullseye on its back from retailers around the world including [Walmart] as well as the Trump crosshairs in the background", writes Ives, who maintains a Highly Attractive rating and a $1,850 price target.
"People are pretty good at learning high standards simply through exposure", he said. He also spent a fair amount of space philosophizing about teamwork, vision and high standards. The company's median compensation figure, however, shows that at least by volume, Amazon's workforce tilts more toward the fulfillment center associates than AI specialists. The number is over 100 million, and before now the online retail giant offered up only vague descriptions like "growing", and "best year ever".
It's hard to believe that Amazon Prime has been available for 13 years at this point, but perhaps ever more surprising is Amazon's hesitancy to talk about just how popular it is among users. And the company is betting the Alexa voice-activated platform will become the next wave of interactions between people and devices, supplementing the computer mouse and touch-screen interfaces.
In another first, the company disclosed the median annual pay for Amazon workers other than Bezos, which was US$28,446, reflecting the large number of retail and warehouse employees on staff.
