Armed with a search warrant, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Cohen's Manhattan office after a tip from the special counsel, according to The Times.
Cohen is under investigation for bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations, the Washington Post reported. Agents seized documents relating to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, the adult film star, as well as emails, tax records and business documents, according to The New York Times.
"I think it's a disgrace, what's going on", Trump added.
President Trump complained Monday that the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation is not only a political witch hunt but "an attack on our country", exhibiting mounting concern about the yearlong probe after federal authorities raided the offices of his personal attorney. That Monday's raid was carried out by the SDNY suggests the president's personal lawyer is a person of interest in a second criminal inquiry, legal experts said.
Cohen is already a subject of scrutiny in Mueller's investigation, which is examining Russia's interference in the 2016 election and whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the race in Trump's favor. Firing Mueller is actually Trump putting the country first.
Trump also called Cohen a "good man" and labeled the special counsel Robert Mueller's team as "the most conflicted group of people I have ever seen".
The news comes after Trump on Monday dismissed Mueller's investigation as "disgraceful", a "witch hunt" and "an attack on our country".
It came after prosecutors in the Southern District of NY convinced the judge they had probable cause that evidence of crimes existed at the locations.
The Victor Pinchuk Foundation, which sponsored the conference, said in a statement to The Times that the $150,000 donation to Trump's foundation was "a specific request of Mr. Trump Foundation in September of 2015 when there were multiple candidates for the Republican nomination for president and it was by no means assured that Mr. Trump would be the Republican nominee in 2016". Former Playboy model Karen McDougal has also said she began a 10-month affair with Trump in 2006, and she took money to stay silent before the election.
Cohen has more recently attracted attention for his acknowledgment that he paid Daniels $130,000 out of his own pocket just days before the 2016 presidential election.
'It also led to the Trump administration itself leveling sanctions against Russian individuals, proof that it's not a so-called "witch-hunt".
"The decision by the U.S. Attorney's Office in NY to conduct their investigation using search warrants is completely inappropriate and unnecessary", Ryan said in a statement.
There have been few signs that Mueller was interested in investigating the payment, though.
"The one thing I think that I agree with Sara wholeheartedly on with Joe [diGenova] is the idea of mission creep but more importantly this opens up an area where it seems that there's no limit at all into the fishing expedition that Mueller is now engaged in and if he has access to everything that his personal attorney has I can only imagine where that's going to lead", Hannity responded. One Mueller witness, former Trump aide Sam Nunberg, recently connected the special counsel with the payment, saying in an interview on MSNBC last month that prosecutors had asked him about it.
The move ignited the president's anger, with Trump calling it a "disgrace" that federal agents "broke into" the office of his personal lawyer.
"Who knows what he's received in writing from his lawyer", Rimm said. "They're not looking at the Hillary Clinton frightful things that she did and all of the crimes that she committed". Cohen has said neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Daniels and he was not reimbursed for the payment.
