A Gwinnett County man has been arrested for driving under the influence of an unspecified type of drugs after flipping a charter bus on Interstate 20 Thursday morning while taking passengers to the Masters Tournament in Augusta. Five of them have serious injuries and two were in fair condition.
Passengers on the bus told Georgia State Patrol officers they were bound for Augusta when the bus overturned on Interstate 20 in Columbia County, according to a statement from the Department of Public Safety.
Physicians Hospital in Augusta released video clip Thursday day of Kip Plowman describing the crash because he appeared in the emergency room to have broken glass taken from his hands.
Hoppenbrouwer has been charged with DUI and failure to maintain lane.
Some later reports claimed that there were only 18 passengers on the bus during the crash, although the number at this time is unclear; it is possible different reports included the driver himself and other did not, but this in unconfirmed.
Eighteen passengers traveling from Atlanta were on board and "several" of them were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the state patrol said.
All seven people being treated at AUMC are adults.
The bus was operated by Jet Executive Limousine of metro Atlanta, Wright said. That's between the Appling-Harlem and Grovetown exits.
The crash originally led to the closure of lanes on both sides of the interstate.
