The Jets' bold move suggests they are interested in selecting a franchise quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick. There's also the possibility the Broncos could try to bluff Buffalo - which went the bridge quarterback route in free agency with AJ McCarron - into making a deal.
For the Jets, you would have to think they're moving up with an eye on drafting a quarterback.
How it can work for the Jets would be for the Browns to take Saquon Barkley and for the Giants to draft either defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick or guard Quenton Nelson. In no particular order, that likely includes Baker Mayfield, Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold.
"The ability to have seven players here in the next two years that are all going to be first- and second-round picks was attractive to us". But, the Jets' front office must have seen a prospect who really intrigues the coaching staff along with the front office enough to give up a multitude of picks.
NY also visited with Mayfield at the Senior Bowl and the scouting combine, and is expected to visit with him again for a pre-draft visit, per ESPN's Rich Cimini.
The Dolphins' AFC East rivals, in other words, want their quarterback of tomorrow right now.
After losing to Minnesota in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes at the start of free agency, NY re-signed Josh McCown and agreed to terms with Teddy Bridgewater, each on one-year deals. The Jets have had 30 starting quarterbacks since Broadway Joe's last game for them in 1976. There has been no shortage of QB talk in regards to this draft and the Jets clearly want a seat at that table. But at this point, neither looks like a long-term answer for the Jets, certainly not McCown, who turns 39 in July.
At the number six pick, the Colts could go a few different routes. That is the biggest x-factor in this: what the New York Giants do.
