According to BJP sources Jaitely would be a party candidate from UP for Rajya Sabha.
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly Secretariat on Monday issued a notification for holding elections to three Rajya Sabha seats scheduled on March 23. "Mayawati's condition was that the BSP will support the Congress candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh if its MLAs supported BSP in Uttar Pradesh", a party leader, who did not wish to be named, told The Indian Express.
Mayawati is believed to have said at a meeting with MLAs in Lucknow that the Congress has agreed to support BSP's nominee in the Rajya Sabha elections. She had said the SP would support the BSP candidate in the Rajya Sabha election while the BSP will back the SP in the forthcoming Vidhan Parishad biennial poll.
BJD is set to win all the three seats with a strength of 117 in the 147-member Assembly.
"Both our candidates are in a strong position and they will win". Patel later managed to retain his seat, with his victory being a morale booster for the party workers ahead of state Assembly polls held in December. Its national president Sanjay Nishad has announced support to the SP candidate in the Rajya Sabha poll as well.
The fight for the 10th seat between the BJP and the Opposition may trigger cross-voting and make the role of three the independents crucial. However, the source also said that the final decision regarding the candidates will be taken by the party high command in New Delhi.
Although state Congress president Raj Babbar put up a fearless face and sought to make little of the understanding, senior party leaders were anxious as they felt that the party could find itself pushed to the back burner if the "experiment" in the LS by-polls succeeded. The other vacancy was caused by Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati's resignation from the Rajya Sabha in July previous year.
