I believe Black Panther will remain box office champion for a third straight week as it does face some competition including Jennifer Lawrence's new thriller Red Sparrow. This Ryan Coogler directorial, that stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and Andy Serkis, has crossed 700 million dollars at the worldwide box office.
One of the most talked about Hollywood ventures Black Panther has proved to be a money spinner at the India box office. It is only the fourth film in history to bring in over $100 million during its second weekend.
The film also holds the records for, according to Forbes, the second biggest comic book superhero opening weekend (after The Avengers), the second biggest Sunday gross (after The Force Awakens) and fifth biggest opening weekend of all time (after Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, Jurassic World and The Avengers in descending order).
"Black Panther's worldwide debut (of $184.6 million) forever slams the door on the myth that predominately black films can't make money overseas", said Jeff Bock, a senior box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations.
Paramount's science fiction horror film "Annihilation" opened in fourth place with an estimated USD11 million.
This bucks the trend of United States studios only committing modest budgets to black-specific movies, out of a belief that white audiences - particularly in the increasingly important foreign markets - will not be interested. The film stars Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams as a couple who sees their weekly game night taken over by a murder mystery that might be more fact than it is playful fiction.
"Just like "Wonder Woman" shattered the glass ceiling of females not being able to lead a box office charge, "Black Panther" should quell any future arguments that African Americans can't deliver the box office goods in a tentpole film", the analyst told AFP.
Black Panther has found love among critics too. With the global collection included, Black Panther minted $704 million. The consensus reads, " Black Panther elevates superhero cinema to thrilling new heights while telling one of the MCU's most absorbing stories - and introducing some of its most fully realized characters".
The culture knew Black Panther was going to be special, and now we have the receipts.
"The assumption is yes because obviously it has proven to be profitable but, then again, there is still this disconnect in our industry".
