And after Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr quite literally let his players coach against the Phoenix Suns on Monday, Lue was asked about the whole ordeal and if he ever would do the same thing.
With the defending champion Warriors dragging a bit leading into the All-Star break this weekend, Kerr apparently searched for a new way to capture his players' interests by handing over the whiteboard during timeouts to a rotating cast of players, with injured Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala getting most of the chances. Throughout the course of the game, coaching duties were shared between Iguodala, 37-year-old center David West, star guard Stephen Curry, and the Warriors' brilliant and brash defensive star Draymond Green.
"It's the players' team", Kerr said after the game, "and they have to take ownership of it".
Watson started six of the seven games he played in as a rookie, completing almost 62 percent of his passes and throwing for 1,699 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. "I haven't been able to reach them the last month".
The Phoenix Suns have been struggling mightily as they've won just one of their last 11 games and they will be hoping to put a halt to an ugly five-game skid after falling to the Nuggets in a 123-113 home loss on Saturday. But at a time the Warriors struggled trying in forgettable February game, the Warriors finally found some objective. "We just figured it was probably a good night to pull a trick out of the hat and do something different". Whatever coach you are, you have to do what you have to do to build your team up. They communicated really well together and drew up some nice plays.
With Payton hitting his first seven shots and scoring 16 early points, the Suns led 26-25 in the first minute of the second quarter before the Warriors took control.
Obviously, Kerr is still coaching in-game, but when a timeout is called it's all on the players to make the necessary adjustments. "It had everything to do with me trying to reach my team". It seemed fitting since Green was already dressed in a suit since he sat out with a sprained left index finger.
The Warriors have climbed the rankings this season in points per game (#1), field goal percentage (#1) and three point percentage (#1). They're exhausted of my voice.
Green eventually took the most predominant role. They lead the National Basketball Association in scoring (115.8 points per game), field goal percentage (.511), 3-point percentage (.393), free throw percentage (.809), assists per game (44.4) and blocks per game (7.95). "I just feel like when we're focused, we are really tough to beat".
