The Hangover director Todd Phillips and legendary film producer Martin Scorsese are an unlikely pair still making an unlikely project: a Joker origin movie. Phillips is set to co-write and direct the film.
The film falls under the yet to be announced banner of DC Comics, which gives the studio the opportunity to expand the canon of the insane comic book character with story angles that aren't included in its current cinematic universe.
The Joker has been played by a number of top actors, most notably Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger.
The as-yet-untitled film will take place outside the current DC movieverse.
That makes the entire concept of a Joker origin film a bit easier to swallow, and since Batman's most famous and enduring nemesis has had perhaps the widest variety of takes of any superhero comic book character ever, it's not hard to see how it could work. One report last fall claimed the actor was perturbed when Warner Bros. began shopping for a new actor for the role. The actor was also eyed by Disney-Marvel to play the titular hero in Doctor Strange, but passed due to the lengthy picture requirement such a contract would carry.
"Phillips" film on the other hand, will dive deeper into the Joker's past and how he became the criminal mastermind fans know and love (to hate). Leto is expected to return as the Joker in Suicide Squad 2 and another movie with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.
Of all the Caped Crusader's enemies through the years, the Joker is by far the most well-known.
