Messages were led by Mr Smith's former wife and ex-band member, Brix Smith Start, who posted: "I'm taking the news in right now".
In a statement, the band's manager Pam Vander says Smith passed away at home this morning.
Moreover, they hope to release more details in an in-depth statement sometime soon. Smith was 60 years old.
A year ago the Fall released their last album New Facts Emerge and played London's 100 Club in July, but cancelled shows in NY and Louisville, after Smith was hospitalised for issues relating to his throat, while Smith performed from a wheelchair in Wakefield in October in what would be his last gig. He performed in the U.K.in a wheelchair past year, and his health reportedly continuned to deteriorate. "I'll miss you Mark".
They released their first two albums, Live At The Witch Trials and Dragnet, in 1979. The members of Garbage wrote: "We will never forget you coming to see us play". Its eclectic musical style, which generally veered from punk to metal, was an essential part of the group's appeal - summed up in an oft-quoted remark by one of their biggest fans, English radio host John Peel. So sharp, clever and untouchably cool. A genius, a curmudgeon and someone whose company it was an honour to share. I really don't want people travelling for no reason in this bitter cold.
I believe his final concert was at the Queen Margaret Union in Glasgow on 4th November 2017 and that night's setlist reads as follows: Wolf Kidult Man, Over! From head patient to you, the patients.
He went on to marry Saffron Prior in 1991; divorcing her in 1995, and then Eleni Poulou in 2001.
