McCabe told Trump that he did not vote, according to the Post, which said the incident left McCabe feeling "disturbed".
They say Trump also expressed anger that McCabe's wife, Jill McCabe, received around $500,000 from a political action committee linked to the Clintons for her unsuccessful 2015 state Senate run in Virginia as a Democrat.
In an op-ed piece published by USA Today on Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the statistics proved that President Donald Trump has kept a promise he made as a candidate to end "American carnage". CNN's Alisyn Camerota asked Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel whether Trump was out of bounds, and she said no.
The Post writes that the conversations between Mr. Trump and McCabe are now of particular interest to special counsel Robert Mueller. A lawyer by training who specialized in counterterrorism work, McCabe became Comey's deputy in February 2016, by which time the election his wife lost had been over for three months. This investigation is separate from the probe into potential coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation - so even if no wrongdoing is found in the Russian Federation investigation, Trump and others close to him could still face charges including obstruction of justice.
McCabe reportedly told associates that he found his Oval Office interaction with the Trump "disturbing".
The meeting between Trump and McCabe resembled the one-on-one time that the president spent with Comey after his inauguration, during which Trump asked Comey for his loyalty and requested that the Federal Bureau of Investigation back off of his then-national security adviser Michael Flynn, who the FBI was investigating.
He also erroneously claimed in a subsequent tweet that Mr McCabe had led the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email during her time as USA secretary of state.
"The only person that has publicly done so is the president himself saying that Wray did not threaten to resign", she added.
Wray has since defended the FBI's reputation in internal memos to staff and on Capitol Hill. James Baker, who was close to Comey, had held the position for several years before he was reassigned by Wray late last month. It is customary for a new director to bring in his own team. Trump also reportedly personally interviewed potential US attorneys for NY. If anybody will make that decision, it's the director.
