In a new promo for this year's Academy Awards telecast, Kimmel talks about the trauma of hosting the 2017 Oscars, which ended with the wrong best picture victor being read, and the awestruck team behind Moonlight - the actual victor - shuffling onstage amid total chaos.
The US TV star, who hosted the ceremony and will return to host again this year, said he is still traumatised by the fiasco, when La La Land was incorrectly announced as the victor rather than Moonlight.
"'Shape of Water' got so many nominations".
Tuesday's Oscar nominations had late night hosts talking.
It's a scene that will play over and over in many cinephiles' heads whenever they think of the Oscars: the ecstatic faces of the La La Land team transforming into confused shock, the star-studded audience's jaws dropping, those fateful words: "There's a mistake".
The biggest snub, though, Kimmel said, was that the picture of Trump looking at the sun during the 2017 solar eclipse was shut out from best picture.
"This year Oscars are renominating "La-la Land" [just] to take the Oscar away from it again", Noah said.
Kimmel also acknowledged the historic nominations of Greta Gerwig, who became the fifth woman and Jordan Peele, who became the fifth African American, to be nominated for Best Director. To Colbert's mind, there's another monster that del Toro's fish man could represent: "It's a great story", Colbert said of the film. "I hope he's seen Get Out".
Wood Jr. said not to count out Denzel Washington though, who is also nominated for best actor for his role in Roman J. Israel, Esq. "Meryl Streep was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in The Post-then she was nominated for a second Academy Award for acting surprised that she was nominated for the first one".
