According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and the Chicago Sun Times' Adam Jahns, Helfrich might've had a choice to join the Wildcats or head to Chicago for his first NFL job.
Mark Helfrich was Chip Kelly's offensive coordinator for four seasons at OR before taking over as the Ducks' head coach when Kelly went to the NFL. They obviously feel Helfrich's experience working with some high-powered offenses at the collegiate level makes him qualified for the job.
The radio host asked Childress, "We had heard reports that he could have had the Colts job but he looked at this Bears situation and went: I like the young quarterback".
He most recently worked as a television analyst for FOX Sports last fall. He was the Chiefs' sole offensive coordinator this season.
That included a 13-2 record in 2014, which ended with a 42-20 loss to Ohio State in the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Game. He has bided his time after he was sacked following a 4-8 season a year ago.
After all, Matt Nagy said at his introductory news conference that he will handle the playcalling for the Bears in 2018.
WSCR's Mully and Haney first reported this as a possibility, and Ian Rapoport confirmed that it was in the works, saying that he might have to choose between the Bears and pursuing Arizona. He coached quarterbacks while at OR, most notably Heisman Trophy victor Marcus Mariota.
What impact can Mark Helfrich have on Mitchell Trubisky?
The 39-year-old Nagy arrives in the Windy City after spending five years with the Kansas City Chiefs, serving as offensive coordinator this past season.
