Pantone has done it again: their 2018 color of the year is bold, beautiful, and nothing like the other color predictions we've seen for next year. They've decided this year to award that honor to Pantone 18-3838, otherwise known as ultraviolet.
"As individuals around the world become more fascinated with color and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings", said Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. The hue, which boasts tones of blue, is also that which will help light the way for the year ahead.
The scientific quality of Ultra Violet, the tone-within-tone, radiant glow, is what speaks to now and next year. To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone's colour experts at the Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new colour influences.
"We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination".
One of the hottest color trends this year was millennial pink. "Ultra Violet" is created when shades of blue and red blend together, which makes it "the most complex of all colors", Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone's executive director, revealed. Pantone also notes that "enigmatic purples have also always been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance".
The institute's description goes on to mention musical icons such as, the late Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix who all introduced the world to their own shades of "Ultra Violet" through expressions of individuality, pop culture and music.
Lastly, Pantone espoused the hue's mystical and spiritual significance throughout the ages, stating, "The color is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today's over-stimulated world".
