University President John Thrasher says the length of the suspension has not been determined.
Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo says indicators suggest alcohol played a role in the junior's death, although they are waiting on an autopsy to confirm, reports CNN. Marcy is a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Thrasher said Greek life will not participate in homecoming this year and that fraternity and sorority chapters will be prevented from holding new member events, council and chapter meetings, chapter organized tailgates, social and philanthropic events, retreats, and intramurals.
"I think campuses are doing it because they believe some form of a perceived strong reaction is a necessity", Fierberg said, adding that schools typically lift the suspensions without changing the self-governance of the Greek houses or adding transparency on incidents. Students who reside in sorority and fraternity houses can continue living there for now. "Unfortunately, we've got to take steps with our students, to make sure this never happens again".
The fraternity has been suspended by its national organization pending the conclusion of the investigation.
"I've communicated with those kinds of groups and let them know that I have zero tolerance for those kinds of activities and that we will bring the hammer down on them if they act inappropriately in those areas", Thrasher told the paper.
"For me and a lot of the people who are entering, we're all pretty upset because we are trying to get the reputation back up", she said.
The university has dozens of programs that work with Greek organizations to educate them on the values they are expected to reflect, providing tools and resources to assist student leaders and advisors in effectively managing their organizations.
John Armstrong, who served as president of Florida State's Beta Theta Pi chapter in 1998, said he had mixed feelings about Monday's announcement. "We want to take a pause and try to figure out what to do as a community, FSU community, Greek community, FSU at large to try and solve these problems", said Thrasher. "I think less drinking is a good response", said graduate student Jacob Kon.
Thrasher also instituted a ban on alcohol at all Recognized Student Organization events during the indefinite interim suspension. They also cannot have any organized participation in homecoming activities, which are scheduled for next week.
