A federal grand jury on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 United States presidential election, a source briefed on the matter told Reuters.
It's unclear what the charges are, but anyone who is charged could be taken into custody as soon as Monday, sources told CNN. So the timing of this is pretty predictable, it's just not clear who it's going to be.
The source did not disclose the name of the target or the nature of the charges. There was also that whole Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer, meaning Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner are still in play here as well. He sent three tweets but they did not refer to the reports. ABC News confirmed a filing was made at the court Friday.
Mueller's office declined to comment on the news.
Special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation after President Donald Trump fired then-FBI director James Comey. By June, Trump himself was reportedly under investigation for obstruction of justice.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Friday told reporters it was "a pretty big waste" for the news media to investigate connections between Trump associates and Russian Federation.
Local political operative Michael Caputo is an East Aurora resident who worked for the Trump campaign past year and has many ties to the President. The names that have popped up most often when discussing possible collusion with Russian Federation are Paul Manafort, Michel Flynn, and Carter Page. "Was collusion with HC!" the president tweeted.
