According to AAA, gas prices have dropped 7 cents in 20 days with the national average coming in at $2.46 a gallon on Monday. The cost-tracking company surveys almost 1,000 gas stations in the St. Louis area.
The string of declines has brought local gas prices back down to $2.55 a gallon - within a dime of their level before Hurricane Harvey slammed Texas and Louisiana in late August. Belleville has the second-lowest at $2.05, but several stations in town were charging $2.25 or more.
The national average for a gallon of gas fell more than penny last week as refineries continue to boost production in the wake of the late summer hurricanes.
Retail prices remain about 5-10 cents higher than where they should be.
DeHaan attributed the price disparity to Pennsylvania having the nation's highest gas tax at 58.2 cents a gallon.
According to GasBuddy, area prices range from $2.54 a gallon in Idaho Falls to $2.64 in Bannock County and $2.46 in Jackson, Wyoming.
"There's more room to come down", said AAA Florida spokesman Mark Jenkins. For instance, the average price in Miami is $2.59 a gallon and $2.38 in Jacksonville.
In the Great Lakes region, the most volatile market in the country, numerous states there have the most expensive gas in the country.
Barring some unforeseen disruption in production/supply, Redman said fuel prices should continue to fall now that the transition to winter fuel is complete.
