Next door in North Dakota, Department of Transportation officials say federal officials have told them that their state's current driver's licenses can be used until October of 2020 to board airliners and enter federal facilities. Until then, Montana driver's licenses will be accepted to board aircraft and access federal facilities.
SC hasn't yet been practicing this; the first "REAL ID" hasn't been issued yet. It is anticipated that this is the last extension request the state will have to submit.
Twenty-six states are compliant with the law and others have obtained or sought extensions. Minnesota's passage of a law complying with the federal standards earlier this year allowed Homeland Security to issue the extension. The Motor Vehicles Division will seek another extension to give it more time to reach full compliance.
The Real ID implementation will affect millions of travelers.
SC is getting another extension for the new REAL ID licenses that will soon be required nationwide. "I am relieved that hard-working Montanans can travel with their current state-issued identification as they prepare for the busy holiday period".
PennDOT expects to have REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses available as an option in March 2019. MSU-B has agreed to develop the campaign free-of-charge, with the state only shouldering costs for student materials, research, advertisement printing and on-air ad placement.
