Parker retained his WBO heavyweight title with a points victory over Hughie Fury in Manchester, though the judges were divided about the result: one scored the fight as a draw, while the other two called 118-110 in Parker's favour.
Despite his relative inexperience the 23-year-old is in bullish mood ahead of his clash with the New Zealander, who claimed the vacant WBO belt in December two months after Tyson relinquished it due to medical reasons. While Fury enjoys a height and reach advantage, Parker has an 11 pound weight advantage despite being the shorter fighter.
Unlike the ungainly Fury, who had danced around Parker for the full 12 rounds, his boxer had fought positively and on the front-foot.
With Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder set to defend their respective titles before the end of 2017 and seemingly on a collision course, Parker and Fury found themselves fighting in the flawless conditions. Fury did tire and Parker did get closer, but essentially it was a battle of wits and Fury, with his father Peter in the corner, won that fight without complaint.
"I don't think he won the fight at all", Hughie said post-bout. The WBO heavyweight title was so close that he could nearly touch it but instead Fury, 23, touched Parker with the jab and touched Parker with the right hand.
"Hughie is a very good boxer". A rematch has to be a worst-case scenario - we want this overturned.
"Joseph was the aggressor, he landed the powerful punches".
Fury recently begged the boxing hierarchy to provide him a fair hearing, stating ban him for life or end the matter altogether, rather than letting it hang in the balance.
Parker wasn't able to knockout Takam and Ruiz because they were able to keep him at distance with their power. He is light on his feet for a big man, and he provides a lot of awkward movement with his upper-body.
"We have a will to fight before the end of the year and there are some good options such as Japan, the United States or going home to New Zealand or Samoa".
That aggression saw him through to victory.
"One thing that Hughie Fury does really well is survive", Barry said.
