Prosecutors are expected to make their sentencing recommendation next week. The two married in 2010, and in June 2011 Weiner resigned from Congress, a month after the release of an explicit photo of him that he inadvertently posted on his Twitter account.
It was shortly after that article was published that reports surfaced of a federal investigation into Mr. Weiner's conduct.
Weiner's latest sexting scandal erupted during the 2016 presidential election campaign. "Unbeknownst to Anthony, JD was looking for material for a book - one she has now written and is shopping to publishers". She cited in her request for leniency Weiner's love for the couple's five-year-old son, Jordan, and the need to reduce any impact he may suffer from his father's legal problems.
As Devlin-Brown tells it, the teenager told government investigators that her intention all along was to tip the presidential election in which Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, was a top aide for the Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.
The discovery prompted James Comey, then director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to announce in late October that the agency was reviewing the messages to determine whether to reopen its investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server as US secretary of state.
Abedin announced her separation from Weiner in August 2016. Nearly always these women came to him, and not all of the conversations were of a sexual nature, they added. Two months later, a judge unsealed the Federal Bureau of Investigation search warrant. In the first three months of 2016, there were explicit communications with at least 19 adult women.
The memo said Weiner underwent a battery of tests, leading to a diagnosis of "mixed personality disorder, likely stemming from childhood emotional trauma", which manifested itself in "addictive behaviour, such as sex addiction".
The ex-lawmaker has reportedly received inpatient treatment and is continuing therapy in NY.
"A term of imprisonment would bring Anthony's indisputably successful treatment for the sickness underlying his crime to an immediate and complete halt, and separate Anthony from the son who has motivated his recovery", defense attorneys wrote.
Weiner, 53, submitted his own letter to the court in which he apologized and said he was continuing to seek treatment. "Every day I quietly do what I can to keep getting better, and to fix the damage I've done".
"Simply put", Weiner's attorneys write, "no one wants to be Anthony Weiner - he is a national pariah".
Huma Abedin, who is seeking a divorce, wrote to the judge as well, saying that she is "devastated by Anthony's actions" and understands "he must face their consequences".
Weiner - who sat with his wife during their divorce case in another NY court yesterday - sexted the girl several times in the run-up to the election.
