Fresno State had some issues up front in its opening rout of Incarnate Word, but the offensive line actually played much better Saturday in a 41-10 loss at No. 1 Alabama.
Spreading the ball around: One game after junior receiver Calvin Ridley was the lone player with more than two targets in the passing game, Alabama spread the ball around a lot more Saturday, with eight different receivers earning catches.
On the second play of the game, Hurts ran right by Fresno State's defense for a 55 yard touchdown, which foreshadowed what was to come from Hurts.
Bo Scarbrough, running back, junior, 6-foot-2, 232 pounds: exclusively judging on statistics, Scarbrough had a forgettable week one performance, rushing for only 40 yards on 15 carries - the most carries of any Crimson Tide running back.
Alabama's quick start began with a simple screen past to senior receiver Cam Sims - who didn't have a target last week against Florida State - that resulted in an 18-yard completion on the game's first play.
Hurts also hit a wide-open Hale Hentges for a 23-yarder in the first quarter. Hurts finished with 96 passing yards on 10-of-18 passing. Whether it was a stellar Florida State defense, a lack of progression by Hurts, or just taking what the defense gave you, Daboll's Alabama offense and Hurts didn't look "new" in Week One, despite off-season promises that both would.
Tagovailoa made his Tuscaloosa debut with the Crimson Tide up 21-3 in the second quarter.
"I thought he did a pretty good job in the game", Saban said.
Hurts' career day on the ground marked his fourth 100-yard rushing game at Alabama. But that would be as far as the Bulldogs (1-1) would get as Virgil was chased out of bounds on third-and-1 for no gain before kicker Jimmy Camacho nailed a 27-yard field goal with 4:03 left in the first quarter.
Fresno State scored on Chason Virgil's 26-yard pass to Derrion Grim with just over six minutes left.
Damien Harris, Bo Scarbrough and Najee Harris have between 15 and 21 carries apiece, nearly evenly splitting the carry load so far. It has to happen sooner or later, but will this be the week that an Alabama opponent finally gets a takeaway? "He'd tell you there were things he could do better". The fan favorite Tagovailoa, who would finish 6-of-9 for 64 yards and a 16-yard touchdown with 2:41 remaining, was not as productive in his first two offensive series, including a five-play punt in which Tagovailoa was 2-for-3 passing but was also sacked on his third offensive play.
Alabama had four of its top linebackers on the sidelines with injuries, with Christian Miller and Terrell Lewis out for the season.
Fresno State plays a second straight 2016 playoff team, visiting Washington for the first time since 2006.
