Yamamoto Shin'ichirō, grand steward of the agency, made the announcement at a press conference following a saika procedure earlier in the day, in which the Emperor approved the coming marriage of Princess Mako and Komuro, both 25. Mako, eldest child of Prince Fumihito will lose her royal status as women in Japan aren't allowed to succeed the throne. Addressing a press conference, Princess Mako told media that she was first attracted to Kei Komuro's "smile like the sun".
The princess said that she will marry Kei Komuro, who was a classmate of hers at Tokyo's International Christian University.
"I hope I can create a warm and comfortable family that is filled with smiles", Princess Mako said. She has a master's degree from the University of Leicester and has been working as a researcher at a museum. The groom to the pricess will be 25-year-old Kei Komuro, a law firm employee. As she is a female, she will lose royal status as the law does not apply to royal males.
The official announcement of the engagement had been scheduled in early July after the Japanese media were reporting about them in mid-May, but the Imperial Household Agency chose to postpone the event due to torrential rains that were striking southwestern Japan. The princess said to journalists both she and Komuro have been courting from the beginning with future marriage in mind. Five years later, they've announced they're getting married.
The announcement was originally expected in July, but it was later postponed after a rain disaster hit western Japan. The relinquishment will most likely take place in December 2018, Japan Today reports.
Princess Mako is expected to Wednesday next year. Japan's Imperiale family was started with wartime emperor Hirohito (1901-1989) and Empress Nagako (1903-2000).
Despite the union being accepted by her parents, under the Imperial House Law, princesses are obliged to leave the royal family should they choose to marry a commoner. Yet Crown Prince Naruhito has no sons, meaning that the succession would pass on to his younger brother Akishino, Princess Mako's father.
